Setup & Usage
Install the Passkey Browser Extension, connect it by QR, and use passkeys on websites
Prerequisites
- The SplitSecure mobile app installed and set up (see the App Installation guide)
- Google Chrome on your computer
Install the Extension
- In Google Chrome, open the SplitSecure Passkey Browser Extension on the Chrome Web Store
- Click Add to Chrome
- In the confirmation dialog, click Add extension
The extension is currently available for Google Chrome only.
Pin the Extension for Quick Access
The extension only handles passkeys while it’s open, so pin it to your toolbar to open it quickly:
- Click the Extensions (puzzle piece) icon in the Chrome toolbar
- Find SplitSecure Passkey Browser Extension in the list
- Click the pin icon next to it
The SplitSecure icon now stays in your toolbar. Click it any time to open the extension.
Connect to SplitSecure
You connect the extension by scanning a QR code with the SplitSecure mobile app. For now, this is the only supported method.
- Click the SplitSecure icon to open the extension and start the connection flow
- Open the SplitSecure app on your phone and scan the QR code
- Check that the identifiers on your computer and phone match, then confirm on your phone
If the identifiers don’t match, cancel and scan a fresh QR code. This is the same check as Device Pairing .
Create a Passkey
Open the extension before you start. It only handles passkey requests while it’s open.
- Click the SplitSecure icon to open the extension
- On the website, open your security or account settings and choose to add a passkey (sites word this differently: “Create a passkey”, “Set up a passkey”, or “Add a security key”)
- When the browser shows the passkey prompt, approve it
- Your approval set approves the request on their devices
The extension then creates the passkey and registers it with the site.
Sign In with a Passkey
Open the extension before you start. It only handles passkey requests while it’s open.
- Click the SplitSecure icon to open the extension
- On the website, choose Sign in with a passkey
- Approve the request when prompted
- Your approval set approves the request on their devices
Once approved, you’re signed in.
Troubleshooting
| Issue | Possible Cause | Solution |
|---|---|---|
| Nothing happens when a site asks for a passkey | The extension was closed when the prompt appeared | Open the extension first, then retry the passkey prompt |
| QR code won’t scan | Camera permission denied or the code expired | Enable camera access in your device settings, reopen the extension to refresh the QR code, then scan again |
| Identifiers don’t match when connecting | Possible network interception, or a stale QR code | Don’t confirm. Cancel on your phone and reopen the extension to scan a fresh QR code |
| SplitSecure isn’t offered as a passkey option | Another passkey provider is handling the request, or the extension isn’t open | Open the extension first; if your browser or OS shows a chooser, select SplitSecure |
| The site says passkeys aren’t supported | The website does not offer passkey sign-in | Use the site’s normal login. Passkeys only work on sites that support them |
